Nanotechnology ! You might have come across this term quite often but never would have imagined its beauty and efficiency. Nanotechnology is becoming a crucial driving force behind innovation with a range of advances. The term “Nano” means very small, almost of the size equal to one billionth of a meter ( 1meter = 1000000000 nm) measured in nanoscale (nanometer i.e. nm). The size of a human hair is as small as 70,000 nm, pore size of skin is 50,000 nm, whereas the size of a virus is 100 nm. Nanotechnology is art of converting matter to nanoscale to get the desired properties.
These particles have a unique feature called the nano-effect, which makes it even more extra-ordinary. Nature is the best example of nano effect. Self-cleaning properties of the lotus plant causing the water to roll is one example of nano effect. Lotus leaves are systematically arranged and water-repellent. Moreover, nano-size domes are present on the surface of leaves. High surface tension of water causes droplets to assume a nearly spherical shape. Besides combination of waxes’ water-repellent chemical properties makes lotus leaf resistant from getting wet. This can be better explained by pictures below.
